Ferne Sirois (pronounced Sir-Wah) has been a professional working artist for over 40 years. She is currently teaching students the various media in which she works; oils, watercolors, and pastels. Ms. Sirois has a unique portrait style that brings life to the canvas and inspiration to each portrait. Hummingbird paints in a variety of styles. You will love her Island themed paintings, inspired by her life in the Hawaiian Islands. And her Western-Native American genre pastels and oils will take you right back to the old west. Ms. Sirois began drawing and painting at the tender age of five. She was considered a child prodigy and was awarded a scholarship to Chouinard Art Institute at the age of 14. Hummingbird did her graduate studies at Otis Parsons School of Design, in Los Angeles, CA.
Hummingbird has a Native American heritage (Sioux), of which she is truly proud. She is noted for her sensitive handling of western themes. Her drawings, paintings, mono-types and murals reveal a passion for history, romance and mystical spirituality. In fact, Sirois' favorite first name, Hummingbird, is her Indian medicine name. A multi-talented artist, Hummingbird first had a career in the performing arts as a soloist dancer in Napua Stevens' Polynesian Review; using the stage name, Kiahi Manu. While living in Kailua, Kona, Hawaii, the inspiration and urge to paint resulted in the series of plein air watercolors of the Hawaii and Oahu Islands. Kilauea's eruption and flow into the Pacific and Pele the Fire Goddess became a powerful new inspiration for a new series of oil paintings. With some friends, she is still known by her Hawaiian name: Hapuu.
After appearing on over 400 PBS TV stations world wide on the instructional art series "Joy of Painting" and "Bob Ross Art Show", Hummingbird is considered an authority in the field of painting. Sirois was published on a 'limited edition' collector plate series by Fairmont China; after which, she was commissioned by the Hamilton Mint to create a series of pastels. Commissions for murals began with frescoes --- murals for AME Methodist Church was the first. Then the Church of Scientology commissioned a series of murals. Next, Child Development of Long Beach requested a mural for the Queen Mary Events Park. In May 2005, the design and completion of a mural for the Baldwin Park Historical Society for the West Wall of the Baldwin Park Museum resulted in recognition from the Legislature, the Senate, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and the Mayor of Baldwin Park.
Hummingbird enjoyed a career in animation films. She produced backgrounds and characters for Churchill Entertainment on the films "Uncle Elephant" and "Stanley and the Dinosaurs," which can be seen on PBS TV nationwide. Hummingbird also produced fashion designs and illustrations for Fredrick's of Hollywood, Catalina Sportswear, Kama Sutra Lotus Wear and Scribbles Fashions.
